Dr. Purnendu Bikash Sarkar is an Ophthalmologist by profession. From his early childhood he had an inquisitive and scientific attitude and made many innovative scientific models for which he received first prize and certificate from eminent scientist Sri Satyen Bose. In 1995 Dr. Sarkar established his own advanced eye hospital, Salt Lake Eye Foundation, which is one of the most renowned and well-equipped eye care center in Eastern India.
Dr. Purnendu Bikash Sarkar is an ardent lover of Rabindranath Tagore. Till eighth decade of last century, modern gadgets like TV, Computer, Internet, and Mobile were unknown. Dr. Sarkar started collecting LP, Audio Cassatas and CD of Rabindra Sangeet of renowned artistes from various sources. In 1994 after purchasing his first computer he started digital conversion of the Rabindra Sangeet from his old collections. At that same time, in spite of his busy schedule as an Eye Surgeon, Dr. Sarkar started extensive research on Tagore and his works.
Dr. Purnendu Bikash Sarkar planned to compile all Rabindra Sangeet from his digital library with other information regarding the songs, in a software to share with everybody to browse and enjoy any Rabindra Sangeet within a moment.
In 2005 Dr. Sarkar developed his dream project, a unique Interactive Software title Gitabitan Archive. In 2006 Gitabitan Archive was released jointly with SAREGAMA, at Bangla Academy by Legend Smt. Suchitra Mitra and Sri Dwijen Mukhopadhyay.
Soon after release Gitabitan Archive was highly appreciated by all, as well as by every print and electronic media as a goldmine of Tagore sings.
In the year 2012 Dr. Sarkar released another edited and more user-friendly version of Gitabitan Archive. Till date more than twenty five thousands of Gitabitan Archive are being used by people, both India and Abroad.
The tremendous honor and success of Gitabitan Archive encouraged Dr. Sarkar to work with the poems of Rabindranath Tagore. Dr. Sarkar believed that Tagore poems are neglected or not recognized by people compared to his songs. Most of the beautiful poems have remained untouched by most of people. After 5 years extensive research and labor Dr. Sarkar compiled another gem of Tagore poems in an Interactive Software Rabindra Kobita Archive. Rabindra Kobita Archive was released at Rabindra Sadan Auditorium on 28th August 2018 by eminent poet Sri Sankha Ghosh and others. This compilation has been also appreciated by all an important and pioneer work on Tagore poems.
Another father in the cap of Dr. Purnendu Bikash Sarkar is his recently published book named Gitabitan Tathyabhandar. This is really an Encyclopedia of Rabindra Sangeet. All information about every Rabindra Sangeet can be gathered from this book at a glance. This 874 pages book has been published from Signet press of Ananda Publishers. In his blessings Poet Sri Sankha Ghosh stared as ‘আমাদের নিরন্তর রবীন্দ্রচর্চার জগতে এটি একটি জরুরি কাজ হিসাবে গণ্য হবে বলে বিশ্বাস করি’।
Earlier in 2009 Dr. Sarkar wrote another book Chokher Katha which was also published from Ananda Publishers. This book is basically a handbook of general eye problems and awareness from various eye diseases.
Apart from printed books Dr. Sarkar regularly writes article in many health magazines regarding day to day eye ailments to aware people. In his eye clinic Dr. Sarkar arranges workshops and other activated for the benefit of his patients.

Dr. Sarkar’s wife Mrs. Barnali Sarkar is an elocutionist as well as a perfect house wife. She is the main inspiration and support in all activates of Dr. Sarkar. In spite of her regular cultural works, TV and radio programme, elocution class etc Barnali never neglects her family. She can wonderfully balance between her carrier and family.
